Thanks to mentor Dave Hwang for sharing his trade study strategy with us. We will be using this process a lot during the first week of the build season as we try and make some complicated decisions in a short amount of time. The meet and greet mentor potluck is next week, Wednesday October 26th at 5:30. I realize band students will have to leave at 6:00 for your practice (congrats for your 2nd place finish at regionals btw). This will be an opportunity for parents & students to meet mentors (and me), ask questions about the program and have some time together. Potluck, bring whatever you have. I will supply plates, cups, forks, cups, napkins, etc. Mecanum build is next week. Is your team ready. The schedule will look like this: CAD/Design 3:15 Plans delivered to electrical and mechanical Mechanical 3:15-3:40 install gear boxes on chassis. Pass off to electrical Programming 3:15-3:30 Download code to Crio, pass off to electrical 3:30-3:55 Create wiring chart (PWM 1=right front motor, etc) Electrical 3:15-3:45 Wire and attach all devices to board, ready for motors. Pass back to mechanical Mechanical 3:40-3:55 Attach battery mount to board, attach electrical board to chassis. Pass back to programming/electrical Electrical/Programming 3:55-4:05 Connect motors to power & to Crio, fire up controls 4:10: Robot driving with five minutes to spare!! See you next week!

I must say I've been very impressed so far with the initiative and hard work that has been going on that past few Tuesdays. Especially like to recognize pneumatics for their work in developing a marshmallow cannon. This will be fun once we get it going.

At this point we have 37 members on the team which is the largest ever and we are getting a couple new members each week.

I'm attaching some light reading ;-) for anyone who is interested on how mecanum drives work. Warning: Math content contained within. You'll probably need some trig experience to make sense of it, but we'll go over it slowly during our meetings on Tuesday. The wheels are ordered and will be here by next week. We need to do some design work.

New members: get in those parent information sheets back asap. You can't start gathering points towards lettering or receive a Windchill invitation until I get those.

Fundraising: We are going to have to start some fundraising. Chocolate bars should be in soon and we can start selling. If you are planning to skip the fund raising morass altogether and would just like to bring a check from home please bring that in soon. Because of the large numbers and potential for fund raising that goes with them I'm reducing the amount required of each student to $150. If everyone can meet that goal 37 * 150 is $5500 which is the lion's share of the $8000-$10000 we need to compete. If your parent works for a company (such as Ball) which has a matching program for donations let me know and we can leverage that to bring in some extra funds.

Wednesday Workshops: The welding workshop has one more week to go. The next Wednesday workshop will start September 28th and run for three weeks. The topic will be project management. The goal will be to dissect the build season and develop a schedule to lessen the impact on us all. Maximum 4 students, you must commit to being there all three Wednesdays, 3:15-4:00.

With good project management/communication amazing things can happen, check out http://www.2hourhouse.com.

Our Saturday sessions have been very productive and focused. Weather reports are calling for a monster storm to hit tonight. Another day off and we may be hurting. Keep your eye on the prize Shazbots, the bot gets bagged up in two weeks from today!
January 16, 2011
Great Start to the build season Shazbots! We successfully and professionally handled the strategy and design matrixes and are now ready to start the design process. We have an intense week of design and CAD ahead and hope we can start building next week. Keep up the work and remember to keep up the grades too!
December 01, 2010
Great thanks to Jeff Davies for bringing in the b*** detonating robot (want to make sure this email goes through the school filters). That was a lot of fun to see robotic applications in work.

If you want to have feedback on our flag design, it is hanging in the lab. I want to get our comments back to Mary Oetting next week.

Remember to bring in those bus permission slips in asap. Let's get this taken care of. Next week is out last meeting before the kick off on January 8th. This must be taken care of before winter break or you won't be able to go to the kickoff.

As to the open enrollment event last night, thanks to those who came in to help. The organizers have some explaining to do and pending that we won't be involved in the evening planned for next week on the 6th. However time may soften my resolve and perhaps the event schedule will be altered to actually include the teachers and students next time. I'll send out another email if help is needed.

Congratulations to those who received their academic letters at this morning's ceremony. As always robotics was well represented on the stage. Keep up the great work!
November 27, 2010
I hope you all have had a good opportunity to rest and are ready to get back to work. A few reminders: Shop certification is this week immediately following our meeting. This is MANDATORY for anyone who wants to be back in the shop using tools The open enrollment night is this week on Tuesday and next Monday. Thanks to those who volunteered to be there, you will receive outreach points for lettering. The event is from 6-8 Please bring in any outstanding money from chocolate sales Please check your lettering stats to make sure you are getting every point you deserve These people still need FIRST permission to attend the kickoff on January 8th: Daniel E, Max R, Joe K, Matthew M, Ben F, Mehmed, Will S, Emily. Talk to me on Tuesday. Without this taken care of you can't attend the kickoff. I will have BVSD bus permission forms on Tuesday-these will need to be taken home and signed FIRST has released the first six sections of this year's competiton manual. Mostly logistical stuff. You can view them at: http://usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/frc/content.aspx?id=452
October 13, 2010
Good work yesterday, sorry about my having to rush out of there to parent teacher conferences, but it appeared you all did great without me. Sometimes I wonder if I'm needed at all. ;-).

Thanks to Matthew M & Rebecca for selling candy bars at conferences last night, they raised $73 for the team & earn outreach points for themselves.

Everyone should be checking their lettering stats at http://www.shazbots.org/lettering.php to make sure you are earning all the points you deserve. Let me know if you see any discrepancies.

Thanks to everyone who registered with the team with FIRST. If you haven't already, please to to https://my.usfirst.org/stims/site.lasso. Create an account for yourself, you will need your parents email. They will receive an email from FIRST and must follow the instructions to give you permission to attend FIRST events. Please take care of this ASAP.

Next week mentor Roger Perry will be doing a tap and die workshop for the mechanical team & anyone else interested. Dave Hwang will be leading us a design workshop the week after that.

The Lego League tournament is November 6th. We will need people to help with the set up the night before as well as on the day. Be prepared to sign up next week. This is a major opportunity to earn outreach points for lettering.

I still have copies of SolidWorks for team members to hand out. Swing by and ask me for a disk if you'd like a copy.
October 06, 2010
Good meeting yesterday. Here are a few of the highlights:
Thanks to Grace for an excellent presentation back in the shop. Pneumatics is next week, get ready Emily & Miriam.
As requested at the fundraising meeting, I have ordered some chocolate bars for people to sell. Hopefully they will be in by next week. We will also meet next week to discuss setting up some give back nights at local restaurants. Many students mentioned their parents work for companies that may be interested in sponsoring the team. Please research this and be prepared to report next week if this is you.
If you didn't attend the fundraising meeting and plan to meet your goal by bringing a check from home, please do that ASAP. I would like all fundraising to be completed by Thanksgiving break.
If you borrowed a Solidworks disk, use it to install the software and please return it to me so I can give it to someone else. Note the serial number on the label has an extra 2 at the end. Ignore that as mentioned in my previous email.
I met with the mentors last night after our meeting. They are excited and ready to go. Roger Perry will be offering a Tap and Die workshop on October 19th. Dave Hwang will do a trade study workshop on October 26th. Barry Anderson has offered the use of his TIG welder. Once we get a finished design we can start practicing welding in case we decide to weld the frame in January.
If you are not on Windchill, get there! Thanks to those who are already using it
September 22, 2010

An opportunity to earn outreach points for lettering has come up. On Monday, September 27th during freshman seminar (2:30-3:00) there will be an activity fair in the small gym. I need 2-4 team members to take the robot down and demo it. This is a good opportunity to get the word out about robotics. Let me know ASAP if you wil be able to help out.

Watch for the Windchill invitation in your mailbox and respond. This is an important tool used for design and document management during the build season. If you haven't received an invitation (or lost, deleted, etc. it) let me know & I will resend.

We need to start fundraising, each team member is expected to contribute $200 either through a check from home or through fundraising. If you will be bringing in a check, please do soon right away. We will talk at the next meeting about how we want to go about fund raising.

Thanks to programmers for their demo at the last meeting. Electronics will demonstrate what they do at the next meeting. Mechanical will be the week after that.

Programmers need to define their fall goals next week, thanks to mechanical for their work organizing the shop & electrical for the back closet. An organized workspace will be a great benefit once build season starts.

Joe has some good ideas for the website & wants to get a picture of the team next week. We do that at the rise of our weekly meeting.

Good work all, keep it up!
September 18, 2010
I have been very impressed with the quality of our new members as well as the willingness of the veterans to assist and help. I have a good feeling about this year. ------------------- Lettering statistics are updated, please check regularly to make sure I am giving you the points you deserve. Lettering stats can be found at the team website: http://shazbots.org Select 'Lettering' from the 'Resources' drop down menu. ------------------ We have defined a design build project for the fall inspired by the pneumatics team-design and build a marshmallow cannon. This would be a cool thing to use during a pep rally/assembly. We will put together design team next week and start the work. Programmers will be presenting next week to the larger group. Electronics the week after that. Get prepared. I will also be doing a Windchill demo next week, look for an invitation in your email to join the Shazbots Windchill project if you don't already have access. (if you don't know what this is, hang onto to the email until next week). ----------------------- Robotics Opportunities September 22 On Wednesday, September 22, the da Vinci surgical system will be on public display at the Longmont Radisson Hotel and Conference Center from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. This is a robot that performs surgery and is used in Boulder. October 2 Labview training in Denver. Three hour training session. This would be great for programmers or aspiring programmers to attend. There is a $20 fee and the team will pay for two programmers that want to attend. First come first serve. See me if you would like to go and I will get you the info and help you register. Lettering points are available for attending either of these events.
September 08, 2010
Wow that was a lot of young new talent that showed up at the meeting on Tuesday. We easily double the size of the team if everyone returns.I expect a few won't, but even so there will be a lot of raw energy we will need to work to harness. Bodes well for the future of the team. We will collect information from them next week and get those we didn't scare off in the loop and start forming our work groups. Good work everyone at making the new folks feel welcome. <p>&nbbsp;</p> We now have a business manager and a Webmaster. Myranda Prentiss comes to use from the Firebears in Minnesota where she managed that team's finances. She brings some valuable experience to the team and has already started working on our first grant application of the year. Joe Kliewer has taken on the job of webmaster. He was in my web design class last year and will be learning the ropes this year navigating Noah's rather complicated code. We are lucky to have both these individuals as part of the Shazbots this year. <p>&nbbsp;</p> We will start having weekly presentations from the different groups the week after next, so get prepared. We will do programming week after next. Prepare a 10 minute demonstration about what goes on back in that corner for September 21. <p>&nbbsp;</p> Most of you are aware that the Davidoff family lost their home in the fire. Donations are being accepted during your second period class, or you can drop it off with me and I'll make sure it gets turned in. I encourage everyone to give what they can to help.

Great work from everybody today, we're off to a great start. If you weren't able to make the kickoff today and want to see the challenge, it is available at robotics.nasa.gov. The drive train is underway and the KOP is inventoried. We meet next on Monday from 3:00-8:00, supper will be at 5:00.
Here is the mentor schedule for the build season. Note that this is subject to last minute changes depending on job issues that may arise for them.

Monday: Dave, Christian, Barry
Tuesday: Dave, Roger, Barry
Wednesday: Roger. Christian, Barry
Thursday: Barry
Saturday: all

I'll be there each night as well, although will probably leave after supper on Wednesdays. Plan on a design matrix for next Saturday to decide strategy/actuation options for herding/deploying the orbit balls. Let's shoot to be driving on Saturday as well if not sooner.
See you Monday!

Hello Team,
One more day to rest up before the fun begins. Here are a few reminders:
1. Bus leaves at 7:00, get there a little bit early. We don't have a lot of wiggle room built in as we need to be seated in the Imax theater at 8:00 for the start of the broadcast
2. There is no lunch provided tomorrow so either bring a few $$ to grab something at the museum or pack a lunch
3. If you haven't returned your permission slips, bring them tomorrow
I expect we'll be back at Monarch around 12:30-1:00 and those that are available can hang around for a while to do some strategizing.
See you tomorrow!
